The eNotes Blog Quick Tips to Make It Through Your Fall TermFinals
Quick Tips to Make It Through Your Fall TermFinals 1. Find an Accountabilibuddy If youve been reading study tips for a while now youll already know the importance of making flash cards and creating a study schedule in time for finals week, so heres a new tip for you. Make a pact with a friend to be accountabilibuddies; you will agree to check in with and keep each other on the studying track leading up to your exams. If one of you strays, the other is accountabilibuddyable, and reserves the right to publicly shame you, or at least make you donate $1 to the procrastination jar. 2. Prioritize Your Studying If you know everything there is to know about mineral compounds but missed a whole class on the rock cycle, you should know which topic to spend more time revising. Its obvious, right? And yet, lots of students waste time revisiting the facts they know best, perhaps for some kind of reassurance that everything will be okay come test day. Everything definitely will be okay, as long as you spend more time covering the areas you feel shaky on first. 3. Get Out of the House Just because youre studying doesnt mean you have to be cooped up in a dark room. In fact, you actively should not do that. Luckily for you theres a great place nearby for you to meet up with a group or just change your surroundings. Its a big open space with lots of shelves, probably a few computers and meeting rooms. Check with your school as every one has one. Its called a library. I know, weird. Who wouldnt want to study in this Duke University library? Good luck on your finals, and have a great winter break! Any questions or comments? Respond below! We welcome your feedback.

Human Resource Management Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Human Resource Management - Term Paper Example In the course of performing these activities, HRM faces a lot of challenges. This term paper provides a comprehensive insight into the challenges commonly faced by HRM in each of the aforementioned activities. Issues of Human Resource Management Diversity and Equal Employment Opportunity Diversity as well as equality has played an important role not only in legislation and policies developed, but it has been demonstrated that it contributes to a business success (Foot, 2011). A diverse workforce allows for a wider pool of possible employees and can increase the chance of finding the best match for a job position. Similarities can be found within the legislation of several countries with regard to equality. The Equality Act 2010 UK (although sometimes considered as controversial) and the Civil Rights Act 1964 US are just some examples of legislation enforced to ensure equality at the workplace. The most common characteristics, which are protected, are age, sex, race, religion or belie f, pregnancy and disability (Noe, 2011). Yet, one has to bear in mind that Equal Employment Opportunity ââ¬Å"does not mean preferential treatment for one individual over anotherâ⬠(Bernardin, 2011, p.84) due to the above-mentioned characteristics. Hiring a person solely on the ground of him or her belonging to a minority while rejecting a more qualified applicant can also be considered as discrimination. In order to work within the law, any Human Resource practice has to evaluate internal policies and adjust documents and actions so they are compliant and do not show some kind of discrimination. However, equality does not only play a role during recruitment; a good equality policy can attract future employees, creates a framework on acceptable behavior and in turn can ensure that employees are treated fairly (Foot, 2011). Job Design and Analysis ââ¬Å"Job design determines the way in which work should be performed which, in turn, affects the degree of authority of an employe e over the work; the scope of decision-making by the employee; the number of tasks an employee has to perform; and employee satisfactionâ⬠(icmrindia.org, 2012). Job analysis is a detailed study of the scope of work and roles and responsibility of the employee in that position. Job designing and analysis is not much of an issue in a stable work environment. However, HRM faces challenges when the organizational culture is dynamic and the top management frequently makes changes in the organization structure in its attempt to change the system for the better. Planning and Recruiting of Human Resources Planning and recruiting is a very technical task and demands considerable effort on the part of the HRM. Before advertising any vacancy, the HRM needs to identify the skillsââ¬â¢ gap in the existing organizational workforce, the job role and responsibilities of the prospective employee, the method of recruiting, analysis of the results, and integration of the new employee into the existing organizational culture and setup. To identify the roles and responsibilities of the new employee, the HRM needs to conduct a detailed study and may require input from the existing workforce. Designing of the method of recruiting is another very complicated and extremely important task because this is the

Publicly-listed companies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Publicly-listed companies - Essay Example Business organizations are formed and nurtured by individuals; therefore, the norms are a reflection of the character patterns of the proprietors. The acts of a defiant worker will result, depending on his/her target, lead to either productivity loss, sabotage property, show no respect for others or anti-social to colleagues. Out of the societyââ¬â¢s desire to have and regulate ethical behaviors, jurisdictions have developed and enacted into law ethical guidelines that inform decisions. Unethical behaviors have been defined in federal law to include invasion of privacy, theft, embezzlement, fraud, price fixing and incomplete disclosures. All organizations are bound by the rules intended not only to punish, but to encourage companies to prevent violations (Zschietzschmann 25). There are three influences in ethical decision-making; intensity, moral development and ethical principles. Ethical intensity is the degree of concern people hold about ethical issues encompassing magnitude of consequences, social consensus, probability of effect, temporal immediacy, proximity of effect and concentration of effect. Ethical principles are a sum-total of long-term interests, personal virtue, religious injunctions, government regulations, utilitarian benefits, individual rights and distributive justice in guiding the process of decision-making. In enforcing and preserving ethical behavior, a company must have code of ethics that all employees must abide by whether inside or outside the workplace. The code of ethics informs, from the onset, how employees are hired to ensure that the employee personal interest conforms to that of the organization. Ethics are further transmitted through continuous training as the law is not static. When faced with an ethical issue to deci de, individual needs to identify the problem as a first step. The next step is to identify the extent of the effect it causes followed by why it came to happen. One has to explore the

The pulley system investigation Essay Example for Free
The pulley system investigation Essay My aim is to create a pulley system which must consist of one, two or three pulley systems so that the results are recorded. I will also investigate and find the difference in the value of the force obtained for the three different pulley systems. Hypothesis I should be able to pick up 500g with one pulley but to make this easier I will use a pulley system, if I use one pulley that the force needed to lift this amount of weight should decrease by 25%. Off course this is my hypothesis Apparatus à Nylon Rope (3 Metres long Rope) Three pulley systems. à 500g mass load force meter. (Newton Meter) à Clamp, Boss, Retort Stand. Loop and Weights. Safety Points The first thing that you must always be concerned about should be the safety of yourself and people around you. Safety should always be looked at seriously as this could alter the results and the test could turn unequal and unfair. You must always be concerned about Safety as this could always make the test more equal and Fair. Make sure that you put a bad underneath the pulleys in case they drop. A tension should always be readily available on the strings so that the whole pulley system does not collapse. Counter Balancing Masses could be an affective way to improve rather than a Newton Meter (optional). Method 1) The pulley must be firstly fixed together with a loop to a retort stand. 2) A string which has looped ends is then placed on top of the pulley 3) Weights can then be attached to one end of the string using its loop. A Newton Meter is than attached to the other side of the string. 4) By pulling down the Newton Meter you are able to raise the weight which sets the height and the effort is recorded on the Newton Meter. 5) You can now attach more pulleys and compare the force required to raise the weights. I have observed that you will not get the required result if you skip weight increasing from one number to another. You must go up step by step to see the trend. This is so that you can take real measurements and make observations correctly. 6) Adaptations To help make the experiment more efficient, the stand was were unstable; I got a friend to hold down the experiment whilst i was pulling the Newton meter. May I also mention that standard procedure may be different to the procedures which conclude in a Science Based Service. Science Based Services have much more detailed and quality instructions as well as equipment which give much more accurate readings. These accurate data include materials such as a digital Newton Meter which gives you an accurate reading to three decimal places. A Service which uses this equipment includes a building company which has to pick up a lot of weight. Diagram Result Test Number of Pulley Systems Force Needed to lift 500g load off the floor 1 0 3N 2 1 4N 3 2 3N 4 3 2N A surprising result has been achieved. The trend is very unusual. I have seen that the more the pulley is added the less force is required. But through observation i can see that without a pulley at all is better that has 1 pulley or 3 pulleys. The device is not very good as it was very unstable and people had to be aware of it. It was probably able to fall but did not due to the care that was taken. The performance of the system as a whole has not really attracted me. This is because the machine we used was insecure and unsafe to use. The first three tests were also very bad as they were better of not to be done. We contained results which were very unexpecting. If you were to add more pulleys the machine would get too complicated and may also not be able to handle it. As you know i had wished to add more pulleys but there were not any more to go around in the class. Conclusion I found out as the number of pulleys increased from 1 to 3 the amount of force needed to lift goes down. Evaluation I could improve my experiment if I repeat the test a few times to cancel any human errors such as wrong measurements which may occur during the measurement of the rope. Other measurements such as the weights may have been misunderstood due to their sizes which will vary accordingly. We also required adding more pulleys to get a more accurate result as more pulleys would have given us a more appropriate result. In the Industry In a laboratory you would use a pulley system simply to get the over all picture. It would be very small machine and the results taken would not be accurate. In a real world industry people have to move very large heavy items and materials. In an industry there are special separate companies which have the business of just moving items with huge pulley like machines. They take accurate reading of all there uses and determine through past experience of how much weight will be picked up and take on a job with the appropriate amount of pulleys. They have also got more stable and secure equipment which is checked regularly. The difference is our equipment is low graded and has not been specified for any specific weight criteria like there. We are also taking experiments before any real work can be taken up. But they have already got all the information required and choose there machine depending on the weight intended. Pulleys are found usually on cranes which help pick loads vertically but they use ropes, wires and chains!

Free Hamlet Essays: The Naivete of Hamlet :: Shakespeare Hamlet Essays
The Naivete of Hamlet Keeping secrets keep you isolated from your friends and make you very lonely. Hamletââ¬â¢s loneliness, false friends, and betrayals cause his downfall to a great extent. The court of Denmark is filled with spies: Claudius hires Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to spy on Hamlet; Polonius spies on Hamlet in Gertrudeââ¬â¢s bedchamber; Polonius uses Ophelia as bait to spy on Hamlet. Hamlet is not a part of this deceit; he is honest. For example, Claudius suggests Hamlet is honest when he and Laertes are discussing their dual scheme; Ophelia believes Hamlet is honest and says, "What a noble mind here is oââ¬â¢erthrown!" (III; i; 157), referring to Hamletââ¬â¢s antic disposition, even though he has been insulting her for two previous acts. His relationship with Horatio shows his true character, because of how much he trusts him. ("Horatio, thou art eââ¬â¢en as just a man as eââ¬â¢er my conversation coped withal" --III; ii; 59). Someone who is naïve is often taken adv antage of in a hard, cold, deceitful world. Having your stepfather get your best friends to spy on you must make you feel horrible. When Claudius hires Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (R&G) to spy on Hamlet, I entreat you bothâ⬠¦/â⬠¦/ so by your companies To draw him on to pleasures, and to gather, So much as from occasion you may glean, Whether aught to us unknown afflicts him thus That opened lies within our remedy. (II; ii; 10-18) they confess to Hamlet that they were sent to spy on him. Hamlet shows this by saying, "Nay then I have an eye of you. ââ¬âIf you love me, hold not off." (II; ii; 301). It is as though he were saying to them, ââ¬ËIf you were really my friends, then you should tell me why you are so interested in everything I do.ââ¬â¢ He later takes revenge on his friends, who are sent to spy on him when he is being sent to England. He opens the letter to the English government, and changes ââ¬Ëkill my crazy son Hamletââ¬â¢ to ââ¬Ëkill these messengersââ¬â¢, and seals the letter back up with his fathersââ¬â¢ ring: Without debatement further more or less, He should those bearers put to sudden death, Not shriving time allowed/â⬠¦/ I had my fathers signet in my purse, Which was the model of the Danish sealâ⬠¦. (V; ii: 45-50) Curiosity killed the cat. Poloniusââ¬â¢ spying on Hamlet is what kills him.

Book Report
The book under analysis is the work by Frey James My Friend Leonard. This choice was spurred by controversial reaction it provoked among the public and literary critics. This novel is, actually, a sequel to the book A Million Little Pieces published a year before. The genre of My Friend Leonard may be defined as a memoir though, as the author himself admits, it contains a certain degree of fictional elements. Frey James is an extraordinary figure in modern American literature. His own biography of a person who experienced problems with alcoholism, drug addiction, and even being a convicted criminal provides Frey with the manifold material which he successfully employed in the memoir. The main character of the memoir is obviously authorââ¬â¢s namesake James who serves time in a prison. After jail release James returns to Lilly, his girlfriend, to Chicago but the life outside the prison is far from harmony. James finds his girlfriend dead after committing a suicide overnight. Being struck by this dreadful discovery the main character still does not go to seeds; he decides to stay in Chicago and takes up job of a bouncer in Chicago pubs. However feeling of rage and the weight of reality makes James be scared of relapse thus he appeals to his old friend Leonard. Since their meeting the story assumes its main plotline ââ¬â the relations between two men, the relations which border upon the friendship and father-son bonds. Leonard is an Italian mobster who offered James to be his ââ¬Å"stepfatherâ⬠when they both where in rehabilitation: ââ¬Å"I would like you to be my son.â⬠Leonard gladly relieves his friend and ââ¬Å"sonâ⬠and helps him to get him on his feet. As the time lapses the scene of action together with the main character transfers from Chicago to Los Angeles. James changes his activity. Now he is a writer. He still maintains close relationship with Leonardo, who remains his faithful friend and tutelary father. The relations that develop between them are presented from deeply psychological side. The author aims to show the deep feeling of people who far from ideal figures still are human and exhibit the best example of the relations called friendship. The depiction of feelings expressed to animals is as masterfully executed as the feelings among humans. Thus while reading the passage where James takes his dog to the hospital to put it to sleep and the farewell scene makes the reader feel the same emotions. ââ¬Å"The vet inserts the needle, depresses the plunger. Cassius yelps like a little puppy, my big tough pitbull feels the sting, I hold him as his blood courses through his veins I hold him as he stumbles, as he falls, I hold him as he dies. I look into his eyes and I tell him I love him and Iââ¬â¢ll miss him and Iââ¬â¢m so so so sorry. He dies in my arms and I hold him and I cry, I cry, I cry.â⬠Returning to the main character and his friend Leonard we witness how their relations arise to its peak point and suddenly Leonardo vanishes. After insistent search James finally finds Leonard and learns that Leonard is gay, suffers from AIDS, and lives his last days. James remains with him and spends these few days near Leonard. Speaking about the mood left after reading the story, it is a deep impression created by its emotionality and at the same time this emotionality at some moments seems exaggerated not typically for that kind of genre. Nevertheless the style does not allow the story turning into melancholy narrative. Frey writes in short simple sentences, often neglects punctuation and thus creates easy reading that develops fluently. As a result we receive favourably distinguishable prose in the genre of memoir but with flavour of captivating fiction. Reference: Frey James (2005). My Friend Leonard. New York: Riverhead.

Tobacco Products Cause And Effects - 1351 Words
Introduction Tobacco products, specifically cigarettes, are products that usually cause a slow, painful death. If death is not eventually caused as a direct result of tobacco products, they can still result in various other debilitating illnesses. It is not only health that the use of tobacco products causes to decline, but also the monetary security of the individual indulging in these items. Whether it is money or health, tobacco products cause severe degradation in both categories. Cigarettes and other items such as snuff can be both directly and indirectly linked to many thousand cases of death and illness each year in the United States. There is no benefit to be gained from use of these harmful reagents, and for that reason a debilitating excise tax should be placed on tobacco products. Addiction All forms of tobacco, such as snuff, cigars, cigarettes, and chewing tobacco, contain the drug nicotine, which accounts for the addictive nature of these products. Nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream when it is introduced to the body, this principle applies whether the tobacco is inhaled, smoked, or chewed. When nicotine enters the bloodstream, it instantaneously begins to stimulate the adrenal glands, otherwise known as the glands that produce adrenaline within the human body. This adrenaline, also known as the hormone epinephrine, prompts the central nervous system of the individual to increase things such as blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate (DrugFacts:Show MoreRelatedSaving Lives By Illegalizing Tobacco1465 Words à |à 6 PagesIllegalizing Tobacco As soon as the door opens to any store, most of the time there will be a tobacco related product nearby.
